Refurbishment and new facilities for Taliesin House and the Talbot Building
Our Cardiff office were appointed by Kier Construction to provide structural design services for the refurbishment, temporary works and new facilities for Taliesin House and the Talbot Building.
Talbot Building Refurbishment
We were engaged to facilitate the remediation/refurbishment of the engineering block at Talbot building. This will house the TATA Steel Innovation Centre. This is an innovative testing facility to be housed on the Swansea university campus. We have undertaken the structural assessment and design to modify the building fabric and incorporate the new structures, including:-
- Design of plinths to house the testing machines. These requiring special design consideration to deal with onerous vibration loading – a potential cause of fatigue failure in structures.
- We also designed the steel gantry to enable the loading of test samples.
- We also designed the structural elements of modifications to the of building to enable access for forklift movements etc.
- We also undertook the radar scanning of concrete slabs to provide information on construction and then carried out performance capacity analysis.
We are also the appointed structural engineers on the Scape Minor Works Framework Agreement for Kier at the university.
