Degree level apprenticeships

We are delighted to announce the graduation of two of our outstanding apprentices, Jessica Broomfield and Samuel Chapman!

Jessica and Samuel graduated this summer with a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering at Derby University, completing a four-year course whilst working with us at our Head Office in Cromford, Derbyshire.

Sam and Jessica have now secured permanent, full-time employment with us as Civil Engineers. They have already worked on numerous live engineering projects, learning directly from our team of skilled engineers whilst studying at Derby University.

Nigel Huish, Managing Director, IDOM Merebrook, commented:

“Congratulations to Sam and Jessica; their dedication and hard work have paid off! They have both shown exceptional skills, commitment, and enthusiasm. This is a proud moment for them and also for the company. Throughout their apprenticeships, they have played pivotal roles in some of our key projects, and I know they will continue to be a credit to their teams.

Degree-level apprenticeships are a fantastic pathway into Civil Engineering; they offer a unique blend of hands-on experience and academic rigour. This approach addresses the skills gap in our industry and provides a rewarding and dynamic career route for the next generation of engineers.”

Jessica, who had also considered studying geology, geography or earth science full-time at university, has never looked back since joining us on our apprenticeship programme.

Jessica commented:

“Combining work and study has helped me apply my learning in real-life situations. I have gained a broad knowledge and understanding of the industry I work in, and the experience has opened my eyes to future opportunities. It has been a massive boost to my confidence and supported me in independent work and being part of a wider team.”

Sam, who achieved first-class honours and received the Severn Trent Water Prize for BEng (Hons) Civil and Infrastructure Engineering Best Final Year Project, commented:

“I chose to complete this part-time apprenticeship as it allowed me to continue working at IDOM Merebrook while studying. The modules I completed were all relevant to my day-to-day work; subjects such as Fluids and Drainage Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Construction CAD and Personal Development, Civil Engineering Construction and Health and Safety all included elements I also used in my work.”

I enjoyed spending a week in the field, completing numerous surveying activities to complete my surveying module. I made a great group of friends, which was a fantastic support network while working and studying.

Sam and Jessica intend to work towards IEng and look forward to further developing their careers at IDOM Merebrook.
